School life

Life beyond
the classroom.

Character is built in everything that happens between lessons: on the field, on stage, on the road and among friends.

  • A girl in a straw headdress and beaded sash, smiling in the middle of a traditional dance
  • A boy in an orange bib about to throw the football out from his goal on Sports Day
  • A girl and a boy on the graduation stage in traditional Rwandan dress
  • Three girls carrying woven baskets with pointed lids at a cultural village
  • A football team in orange bibs huddled together with their coach
  • Three young graduates in caps and gowns, smiling
  • A toddler on the playground making a peace sign
  • Two pupils in uniform singing on stage
  • A small boy with a backpack, grinning with his arms flung wide

Room to find what they love.

Some children come alive with a ball at their feet, some in costume on a stage, some on a bus heading somewhere new. The school year makes room for all three.

On the field

Sport teaches teamwork, resilience and how to win and lose well. On Sports Day every child is in a team, whether they are chasing the ball or hopping to the line in a sack.

  • Football
  • Sack races
  • Tug of war
  • Playground games

On stage

Song, dance and costume are part of the school year, not an extra. Children rehearse traditional dances, choir pieces and speeches, then perform them for their families.

  • Traditional dance
  • Choir and song
  • Costume and drama
  • Speeches and poems

Out in the world

Some lessons are best learned outside the gate. Classes travel together to see how a mat is woven and a cow is milked, to walk through a museum, and to share a meal somewhere new.

  • Cultural village
  • Museum visits
  • Traditional crafts
  • Lunch out together

Three languages, and a voice of their own.

Children hear more than one language every day, in class, at play and at assembly. By graduation day they are ready to stand at a microphone in front of the whole school.

  • Good morning

    English

The language of lessons, from the first day of nursery.

  • Mwaramutse

    Kinyarwanda

The language of home, of songs and of stories.

  • Bonjour

    French

Added in primary, and taught through to Grade 6.

Days the whole school looks forward to.

These are the days children count down to. Families are welcome at every one of them.

  • Sports Day

Football in team colours and sack races on the school field, with certificates, a trophy and matches for the parents too.

  • Graduation day

Leavers in cap and gown collect their certificates and cut the cake. Before that, the whole school takes the stage.

  • Christmas party

Santa hats, a cake, bouncy castles and tug of war on the grass before the holidays.

  • School trips

By bus to a cultural village, a museum or a play park, and home again with stories to tell.

Parents are part of it.

On Sports Day, parents fill the steps, cheer every race and then play matches of their own. On graduation day they come dressed for the occasion, and they are on stage beside their children when the certificates are handed out.

The year in pictures.
